Deadlines, shipping estimates, and service-level agreements usually run on business days, not calendar days. This walks the range day by day, counting only weekdays — so a "5 business day" turnaround lands on the right calendar date even across weekends.
A business day is a weekday: Monday through Friday, with Saturday and Sunday skipped. That sounds like something you could approximate by taking the calendar days and multiplying by five-sevenths, and for long spans you nearly can — but "nearly" is what makes a deadline land on the wrong date. The number of weekdays in a fixed run of calendar days depends on which weekday the run starts on, so the only reliable method is the one this calculator uses: walk the range one day at a time and count.
The page opens with today's date in the start box and a date 45 days later in the end box, with "include the start day" set to no — so it counts the 45 days after the start date. Take the defaults as they stood on Thursday 10 September 2026: the run is Friday 11 September through Sunday 25 October, 45 calendar days. Count it in two pieces:
Totals: 31 business days, 14 weekend days, 45 calendar days, and 31 ÷ 5 = 6.2 work weeks — exactly what the calculator reports. Now shift the start to a Monday and keep the 45-day span: the leftover three days become weekdays instead of a weekend, and the answer rises to 33 business days. The same span, the same length, two fewer or two more working days depending on nothing but the starting weekday. That two-day swing is the whole argument for counting.
The first is whether the start day counts. "We'll ship within 5 business days" almost always means five days after today, which is this tool's default. A contractual clock — a notice period, a right to cure, a statutory response window — often counts both ends, and that is what the toggle is for. One day of difference sounds trivial until it decides whether a deadline was met.
The second is holidays. This calculator excludes weekends and nothing else, because public holidays vary by country, by state or province, and sometimes by industry, and a tool that guessed yours would be confidently wrong. If your window covers a holiday your business observes, subtract it yourself: a 31-business-day window that contains one public holiday is 30 working days. For international work, remember the other side's calendar is different from yours — a European August and an East Asian new year both swallow more days than a single date.
