Dividend yield = annual dividend ÷ price. Yield on cost divides the dividend by what YOU paid, so it rises as a company grows its payout. A very high yield can signal a falling price or an unsustainable dividend — check the payout ratio. Not investment advice.

Yield vs. yield on cost

Dividend yield is the annual dividend as a percent of the current price — what a new buyer earns today. Yield on cost uses your original purchase price instead, so as a company raises its dividend over the years, your personal yield on cost climbs even if the market yield stays flat.

Yield = annual dividend ÷ price · Yield on cost = annual dividend ÷ your cost

Quick FAQ

Is a higher yield always better?

Not necessarily — an unusually high yield often means the share price has dropped or the dividend is at risk. Check the payout ratio and dividend history for sustainability.

How is yield on cost useful?

It shows the reward of holding a dividend grower. Buy at a 4% yield and if the payout doubles over a decade, your yield on cost is 8% — while new buyers still see 4%.
