What an appliance costs to run

Power (watts) times hours gives watt-hours; divide by 1,000 for kilowatt-hours (kWh), the unit your utility bills. Multiply by your rate to get the cost — scaled to a day, month, or year.

Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × rate

Quick FAQ

Where do I find the wattage?

On the appliance's label or manual. If only volts and amps are listed, watts ≈ volts × amps.

Why is my bill higher than this?

This is one appliance. Your bill sums everything, plus fixed fees, taxes, and possibly tiered or time-of-use rates.
