On a $25 item with $5 shipping, Etsy takes roughly $3.30 in fees before you've paid for materials or postage. Knowing the real number is how you price so a sale is actually worth making — and why raising price or lowering cost of goods matters more than chasing volume on thin margins.
We run a live Etsy shop ourselves, so these are the fees that come out of our own payouts, not a guess. On a typical US sale, Etsy deducts four things before the money reaches you: a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price (plus shipping you charge), a payment-processing fee (in the US, about 3% + $0.25 per order), a $0.20 listing fee each time an item sells or is renewed, and — if the sale came through Etsy's ads — an Offsite Ads fee of 12% or 15%. Your true profit is the sale price minus all of these and what the product cost you to make.
Sell a $20 item with $0 shipping. Transaction fee: $1.30 (6.5%). Processing: $0.85 (3% + $0.25). Listing: $0.20. That is $2.35 in Etsy fees, so you net about $17.65 before your own product cost — roughly an 88% take on a digital item that costs you nothing to reproduce. If that same sale is attributed to Offsite Ads at 15%, add $3.00 and your net drops to about $14.65. That single line is why order value matters so much on Etsy: fixed fees ($0.20 + $0.25) hurt small orders far more than large ones.
