Find your inflation-adjusted (real) return from a nominal return and inflation — what your money actually gained in buying power.
Real return uses the exact Fisher equation: (1 + nominal) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. Simply subtracting inflation from the nominal return is a close approximation but slightly overstates the real return. Inflation quietly erodes returns — always compare after it. General information only.
A nominal return is the headline number; the real return is what's left after inflation eats into your buying power. An 8% return in a year of 3% inflation isn't an 8% gain in what you can actually buy — the Fisher equation gives the true figure, a bit under the simple 8% − 3% = 5% shortcut.
Real return = (1 + nominal) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1
It's a fine rough estimate, but it slightly overstates the real return. The Fisher equation is exact and matters more when rates are high.
Yes — if inflation outruns your nominal return, your money loses buying power even though the balance grew. That's why cash and low-yield accounts can quietly lose ground.
