Revenue ROAS looks bigger than profit. The break-even ROAS (1 ÷ margin) is the real bar — below it, ads lose money even if ROAS looks above 1.
Return on ad spend is revenue divided by ad spend — but revenue isn't profit. At a 50% margin you need a ROAS of 2× just to break even, because half the revenue is cost of goods. This calculator shows your ROAS and the break-even ROAS you actually have to beat.
Divide revenue attributed to ads by the ad spend. A 4× ROAS means $4 back for every $1 spent — but check it against your break-even ROAS (1 ÷ your margin) to know if it's actually profitable.
Above your break-even ROAS, with room for overhead. At a 50% margin, break-even is 2×, so aim comfortably above that. Thin-margin businesses need a much higher ROAS.
