Add VAT to a net price or remove VAT from a gross price at any rate — free, no sign-up, any VAT rate, and see the VAT amount either way.
VAT/GST rules and rates vary by country and product. This is arithmetic only, not tax advice. General information.
Adding VAT grows a net price by the rate. Removing VAT works backwards from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price — you can't just subtract the rate, you divide by 1 plus the rate.
Add: gross = net × (1+rate) · Remove: net = gross ÷ (1+rate)
VAT (value-added tax) is a percentage tax added to a price. There are only two operations, and the second one is where people slip up: adding VAT to a net (tax-exclusive) price, and removing VAT from a gross (tax-inclusive) price. Adding is easy — multiply by one plus the rate. Removing is the trap, because you cannot simply subtract the percentage.
The VAT was calculated on the net price, not the gross, so to strip it back out you divide the gross by (1 + rate), then the VAT is the difference. Subtracting the rate instead overshoots and understates your true net. Take a £120 gross at 20% VAT: the correct net is 120 ÷ 1.20 = £100, so the VAT is £20. Subtract 20% of 120 and you get £96 — a £4 error on a single small sale, and a systematic one that compounds across a whole year of invoices.
Adding: a £250 net service at 20% VAT bills at 250 × 1.20 = £300 gross (£50 VAT). Removing: a till total of £90 at 20% breaks down to 90 ÷ 1.20 = £75 net + £15 VAT. Whichever direction you need, the figure the tax authority wants is the VAT line — the middle number — so getting the net right is what keeps your return accurate.
Because the 20% was added to the net, not the gross. Removing it means dividing the gross by 1.20, which gives a slightly larger net than subtracting 20% would.
Similar idea, different mechanics — VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain; US sales tax is charged once at the point of sale.
