Credit Card Payoff Calculator

See what an extra payment really buys you. Enter your balance, APR, your minimum payment, and any extra you can add — and see how much sooner you're debt-free and how much interest you save.

Quick answer: To pay off a credit card, your monthly payment must exceed the monthly interest, or the balance never shrinks. Monthly interest ≈ balance × (APR ÷ 12). This calculator shows how many months it takes to clear your balance at a given payment and how much interest you'll pay — raise the payment to watch both drop.
What you owe on the card today.
The card's annual rate. Many cards run 18–26%.
What you pay now. Must be above the monthly interest to make progress.
Anything you add on top. This is the lever that gets you out faster.

Estimate only — assumes a fixed APR and no new charges on the card. Real cards compound daily and minimums shrink as the balance falls; treat this as a planning guide.

Why a small extra payment does so much

On a high-APR card, most of your minimum payment goes to interest — only the rest lowers the balance. Every extra dollar goes straight to principal, so it compounds in your favor: less balance means less interest next month, which means even more of the following payment reduces the balance.

Snowball vs. avalanche (multiple cards)

With several cards, two proven orders help: avalanche (pay the highest APR first) saves the most money; snowball (pay the smallest balance first) gives quick wins that keep you going. Use this calculator on your highest-rate card first, then roll its payment onto the next.

Quick FAQ

How long will it take to pay off my credit card?

It depends on the balance, APR, and payment. This calculator solves for the exact months at your current payment plus any extra, and shows how much sooner you're done — and how much interest you save — versus paying the minimum.

Why does paying only the minimum take so long?

Because the minimum is mostly interest on a high-APR card, so the balance barely moves. Adding even a small fixed extra each month can cut years and thousands in interest off the payoff.
