APY Calculator

Find the real annual percentage yield (APY) on a savings account or CD. Enter the nominal rate and how often it compounds, and see the APY plus the interest you'd earn.

The stated interest rate (APR), before compounding.
Optional — to see the interest earned in a year.
APY
Interest earned (1 yr)
Balance after 1 year

Estimate only. APY assumes the rate and balance stay constant for a year and interest is reinvested. Real accounts can change rates and have fees.

APY vs. interest rate

The nominal rate (APR) is the stated rate; the APY is what you actually earn once compounding is included. The more often interest compounds, the higher the APY. At a 5% nominal rate compounded monthly, the APY is about 5.12%.

APY = (1 + rate ÷ n)ⁿ − 1

…where n is the number of compounding periods per year.

Quick FAQ

What is the difference between APR and APY?

APR is the simple stated rate; APY includes the effect of compounding, so it's the true yearly return. Compare savings accounts on APY, not the nominal rate.

How is APY calculated?

APY = (1 + r/n)ⁿ − 1, where r is the nominal annual rate and n is how many times it compounds per year. This calculator does it for you and shows the interest earned on your balance.
