Debt-to-equity = total liabilities ÷ shareholder equity. Higher means more leverage — greater potential returns but greater risk. Healthy levels vary widely by industry (capital-intensive sectors run higher). Negative equity is a red flag. General information only.

How much is borrowed?

Debt-to-equity shows how a business is financed: a ratio of 1 means equal debt and equity, above 1 means more debt than owners' capital. Leverage can amplify returns, but it also raises risk and interest costs — lenders and investors watch it closely.

D/E = total liabilities ÷ shareholder equity

Quick FAQ

What's a good debt-to-equity ratio?

It depends heavily on the industry — utilities and real estate run high, software runs low. Compare within a sector. Broadly, under 1–2 is often seen as manageable.

Is more equity always safer?

Less debt lowers risk, but some leverage can boost returns on equity. The goal is a level the business can service comfortably through downturns.
