Payback Period Calculator

Find how long an investment takes to pay for itself — from its cost and the cash flow it generates — plus the simple annual return.

Upfront cost.
Net cash it returns per year.
For total return.
Payback period
Simple annual ROI
Total return over life
Net profit over life

Simple payback = cost ÷ annual cash flow; it ignores the time value of money (a dollar next year is worth less than today). For a discounted view, use NPV/IRR. Assumes steady annual cash flow. Not investment advice.

How fast does it pay for itself?

Payback period is the simplest investment screen: divide the upfront cost by the annual cash it returns to see how many years until you're whole. Shorter is safer. It doesn't discount future cash — that's its limitation — but it's a fast, intuitive first cut for equipment, software, or a marketing push.

Payback period = initial investment ÷ annual cash flow

Quick FAQ

What's a good payback period?

It depends on risk and industry, but many small businesses want equipment to pay back in 1–3 years and marketing far faster. Shorter payback means less exposure if things change.

Why isn't this the whole story?

It ignores cash flows after payback and the time value of money. Pair it with total return over the asset's life (shown here) and, for big decisions, a discounted method.
